FinTech North’s Manchester plans confirmed



FinTech North has confirmed the agenda for its inaugural Manchester conference, which will take place on 22nd May in partnership with University of Manchester at the Whitworth Art Gallery.

The Manchester conference is the second in a series of three major FinTech North events across the north, with the other events in Leeds and Liverpool. The conference will see a speaker line up of over 30 industry professionals and academics share their experience and expertise with an audience drawn from across the financial services, tech and FinTech sectors.

FinTech North was established in 2016 and is a not-for-profit events based initiative that aims to generate collaboration in FinTech across the Northern Powerhouse. Since its inception, it has hosted 17 events and attracted over 1500 attendees from over 400 organisations including banks, building societies, other financial services institutions, technology businesses, investors, advisors, academics, and FinTech entrepreneurs.

Luke Freeman, Director of Whitecap Consulting, the co-founders of FinTech North, will open the event and introduce the first session, which will focus on the topic of FinTech in the Northern Powerhouse.

The opening session will be followed by a panel session including Ross Mumford, FinTech lead at the CBI, Andrew Toolan of Midas, and SkyParlour’s Kimberley Waldron.

The second session of the day will be dedicated to the hot topic of FinTech Skills and Resources and will be hosted by senior representatives and experts from University of Manchester. Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, University of Manchester President and Vice Chancellor, will open the session, followed by Dr. Andrew James, Associate Dean for Business Engagement and University academic lead for FinTech. A showcase of current applied research projects with industry partners and a panel session discussing how industry-academic collaborations can help drive innovation, will draw the morning to a close.

After lunch, delegates will hear from some of the most exciting financial services and FinTech brands in the region, including Access Pay, AJ Bell, Together, Barclays, DLA Piper and Eversheds Sutherland. An innovation panel will be chaired by Jeff Poole, Managing Director of Freedom Finance, and there will also will be a panel dedicated to funding, chaired by North Invest’s Sara Parker and including  GP Bullhound and Maven Capital.

The fourth and final session of the day, the FinTech Showcase, will be chaired by the Department of trade’s FinTech Specialist for the Northern Powerhouse, Jeremy Coupland and will include speakers from FinTech innovators Padoq, Envestors, Nivo, Osaka Labs, and two yet to be announced Canadian FinTechs.

A drinks reception, sponsored by AJ Bell, will close the event, giving speakers and delegates the opportunity to discuss the day’s events and network in an informal setting.
